Сюжет основан на одноименном романе аргентинской писательницы Арианы Харвич. Молодая пара Грейс и Джексон (Дженнифер Лоуренс и Роберт Паттинсон) решили покинуть Нью-Йорк и перебраться в уединенный дом в горах Монтаны. После рождения ребенка жизнь Грейс начинает стремительно рушиться: изоляция, одиночество и послеродовая депрессия постепенно перерастают в психоз. Героиня пытается справиться с внутренними демонами, но отсутствие поддержки мужа лишь усугубляет ее состояние. На плаву ее держат лишь забота свекрови (Сисси Спэйсек) и внимание местного мотоциклиста (Лакит Стэнфилд).
